SAFE GROUP RIDING

SHROPSHIRE and MID-WALES CTC

- local branch of the national cyclists’ organisation

Cycling is a healthy and fun activity but takes place in a potentially hazardous environment. This leaflet aims to keep you safe while enjoying your cycling.

Shropshire and Mid Wales District Association of the CTC has extensive experience of organized cycling and has a well deserved reputation for safe, responsible behaviour on and off road. We are committed to taking care of the riders in our groups and to considering other road users.

This leaflet is the result of a good deal of thought about our good practices and, having reviewed our experience, we are publishing it to convey information to new and existing riders and leaders.

We make no apology for including some things that experienced riders may find obvious – whatever our level of experience, we can all learn from reviewing our skills from time-to-time! Please take the time to read through the following guidelines.

Stay safe and enjoy your cycling!

WHEN RIDING IN A GROUP, REMEMBER…

  • You are responsible for your own safety – and that of others.
  • Ride a roadworthy cycle – it is your responsibility to maintain your cycle! Brakes, tyres, lights, reflectors are important.
  • Wear high visibility clothing and consider the use of a helmet.
  • Read and follow the Highway Code. Always consider and be courteous to other road users.
  • Be aware of what is happening around you – allow sufficient room for others and do not overtake without warning.
  • Indicate when slowing or stopping (shout "stopping" well before) and stop only in a safe place.
  • Riders in the group may shout "car up" when a vehicle is coming up behind or "car down" when the vehicle is approaching from the front.
  • There may be times when the leader will split a large group by leaving a gap in the middle to make it easier for overtaking cars.
  • Follow the advice/instructions of the leader and inform the leader if you have to leave the ride.
  • Don’t overtake the leader (possible exception - when climbing hills, then wait at top in a safe place).
  • Carry food and drink and adequate clothing.
  • Whatever your level, it is still possible to improve your riding.

WHEN LEADING A GROUP, REMEMBER…

The advice on page 2 also applies to leaders (!) but leading a group carries additional responsibilities. As leader …

  • Plan and ride a safe route beforehand, including stops. Use cycle tracks when appropriate.
  • Consider any unusual risks and warn group beforehand (busy road/ steep descent/weather conditions).
  • Appoint a tail-end rider (who should know the route) to keep group together.
  • Single out when necessary (leaving gap in a large group) but ensure group waits at turns to guide following riders.
  • Lead from the front and by example – pass on your expertise by explaining to new riders the conventions of group riding.
  • Ensure all riders ride in accordance with the Highway Code and that everyone has a copy of this leaflet!!
  • Be aware of the abilities of the group and ride appropriately within the level of the advertised ride.
  • Advise/instruct as needed. Give clear instructions/ directions.
  • Indicate hazards during the ride (other road users/
  • obstructions/poor surface) and when stopping. Stop only in a safe place, always off the road if possible.
    • Don’t forget food, drink and comfort stops! It may be necessary to book ahead.

    INSURANCE

Membership of the CTC is strongly recommended and includes Third Party Insurance among many other benefits. New riders may ride with us as guests on six occasions before joining the CTC. Leaders and Organisers of DA events have additional Public Liability Insurance.

All DA volunteers are individually registered with the CTC. A copy of this register is maintained at local level by the DA.
